How much does an ASN cost in 2026? In the RIPE region, an ASN costs €130 per year through our sponsorship (as of September 2026): our €80 service fee plus the RIPE NCC's €50 per-ASN charge, passed through at cost. Direct RIPE NCC membership costs €2,850 in the first year and €1,850 per year after that under the RIPE NCC Charging Scheme 2026 (ripe-848). Elsewhere one ASN costs $275 a year at ARIN (2026 fee schedule), US$1,000 once at LACNIC, US$400 plus US$50 a year at AFRINIC, and AUD 1,000 in the first year at APNIC (AUD 500 sign-up plus the AUD 500 Associate fee).
Registry fees are the cheapest part of running an ASN, yet in the RIPE region the gap between a sponsored ASN and direct membership is €1,720 a year for the same single ASN in 2026. Infrastructure, transit and staffing costs stack on top of whatever the registry charges.
ASN Cost Components Overview
An ASN budget has a registry line (sign-up and yearly fees) and a network line (transit, router, IXP ports, staff time). The registry line is fixed by the RIR or by your sponsoring LIR. The network line depends on your traffic, not on which RIR issued the number.
RIPE NCC Cost Breakdown
RIPE NCC serves Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia with a membership-based fee structure.
Direct RIPE Membership (LIR)
Initial Costs (Year 1, 2026):
- LIR sign-up fee: €1,000 (one-time)
- Annual contribution per LIR account: €1,800
- Per-ASN assignment fee: €50 per ASN per year
- Total Year 1 (one ASN, joining in January): €2,850 (mid-year joiners pay the annual contribution pro rata per quarter)
- Source: the RIPE NCC Charging Scheme 2026, ripe-848
Annual Costs (Year 2+, 2026 scheme):
- Annual contribution per LIR account: €1,800
- Per-ASN assignment fee: €50 per ASN
- Per-independent-number-resource fee (PI IPv4/IPv6, IXP, anycast, legacy IPv4 through a sponsoring LIR): €75 each
- Total Annual (one ASN, no PI resources): €1,850
What's included in LIR membership:
- Further ASNs on request, each justified under ripe-679 and billed €50 per year
- One IPv4 /24, once, from the waiting list (791 LIRs queued, the first waiting 485 days, on 25 September 2026)
- An IPv6 allocation of a /32, or up to a /29 without further justification (ripe-738)
- Access to RIPE NCC services and support
- Voting at the RIPE NCC General Meeting (Executive Board elections, the charging scheme)
- Training and educational resources
What changes in 2027: The €50 per-ASN fee arrived with the 2025 scheme (ripe-828) and stays in 2026. From 1 January 2027 the RIPE NCC Charging Scheme 2027 (ripe-867), adopted at the May 2026 General Meeting, sets €1,894 per LIR account with the first ASN included. Each additional ASN costs €50, and independent assignments stay at €75. Membership obligations and what the fee buys are covered in RIPE LIR Membership Costs and Benefits (2026). Who pays more under ripe-867, line by line, is in RIPE NCC Charging Scheme 2027: What ripe-867 Changes and Who Pays More.
Sponsoring LIR Option
For organizations that do not want direct RIPE NCC membership, a sponsoring LIR holds the RIPE NCC contract on their behalf. The RIPE NCC charges the sponsoring LIR €50 per sponsored ASN per year under ripe-848, and the LIR bills its own service fee on top. Through us that is €130 per year all-in: an €80 administration fee in the first year, an €80 service fee on each renewal, plus the €50 RIPE NCC fee at cost. Paying two years at order costs €234: year two is 20% off our fee (€26), and the RIPE NCC line stays at cost. An optional express review costs €60 one-time and puts the file in a priority queue, filed with the RIPE NCC as soon as our review completes.
Already hold an ASN under another LIR? A move to us has no setup fee, only the €130 yearly fee: see change your sponsoring LIR. Under the 2027 scheme the RIPE NCC per-ASN fee for a sponsored ASN stays €50 when the LIR already holds an ASN. Prices at other sponsoring LIRs are compared, with dated sources, in ASN Sponsorship Price Comparison (2026): What Sponsoring LIRs Really Charge.
RIPE Cost Comparison
| Route | Year 1 | Following years | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct membership (one ASN) | €2,850 (2026) | €1,850 in 2026; €1,894 in 2027 with the first ASN included | Your own IPv6 allocation, several ASNs, sponsoring your own customers' resources |
| Sponsored through Via-Registry | €130 (€234 for two years prepaid) | €130 | One ASN and a /48 to announce |
Joining in January 2026 and holding one ASN, direct membership costs €2,850 in 2026 and €1,894 in 2027 (ripe-867, first ASN included): €4,744 over the two published years. Through our sponsorship the same two years cost €260, or €234 with year two prepaid at order. The RIPE NCC publishes one scheme per year, so no later figure exists yet.
ARIN Cost Breakdown
ARIN (American Registry for Internet Numbers) serves North America with a straightforward per-resource fee structure.
ARIN Fee Schedule
Initial Costs (Year 1, 2026):
- ASN issuance: no fee since January 2024 (the ASN sits inside the RSP fee)
- Annual RSP fee (3X-Small category covering 1 to 3 ASNs and small IP holdings): $275
- Total Year 1: $275, plus $50 if you first create an Org ID
Annual Costs (Year 2+):
- Annual RSP fee: $275 (3X-Small) in 2026, $288.75 from 1 January 2027; higher categories follow cumulative holdings
- Total Annual: $275 at the smallest category in 2026, $288.75 in 2027
ARIN Registration Services Plan includes:
- ASN maintenance
- WHOIS database listing
- Access to ARIN Online portal
- IRR (Internet Routing Registry) services
- Technical support
The annual fee covers both the ASN and the required Registration Services Plan. The Board approved a 5% RSP increase effective 1 January 2026, bringing the 3X-Small category to $275, 2X-Small to $550, X-Small to $1,100 and Small to $2,205 (ARIN Fee Schedule, 2026 fee increase announcement). A further 5%, approved on 19 April 2026, applies from 1 January 2027: 3X-Small $288.75, 2X-Small $577.50 (2027 fee schedule). ARIN only issues resources to organizations legally formed in its service region.
Comparison with IP Address Fees
Organizations holding both ASNs and IP addresses pay:
- ASN + RSP at the 3X-Small category: $275/year in 2026
- Larger holdings move into 2X-Small ($550), X-Small ($1,100), Small ($2,205) and upwards
ARIN bills one RSP fee per organization, the highest of its IPv4, IPv6 and ASN categories. An organization with one to three ASNs, at most a /24 of IPv4 and at most a /40 of IPv6 stays 3X-Small; a waiver lets a 3X-Small organization hold up to a /36 of IPv6 until 31 December 2026.
APNIC Cost Breakdown
APNIC (Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre) uses a formula-based fee structure whose ASN fees changed on 1 January 2025.
APNIC ASN fee structure (2026)
ASN fee rules in force since 1 January 2025 (unchanged in 2026):
- First two ASNs per account holder: Free
- Additional ASNs: AUD 100 per year each (annual fee)
- Allocation fee for the 3rd ASN and beyond: AUD 500 one-time
- Reference: APNIC Member Fee Schedule
Initial Costs (Year 1, first ASN):
- ASN allocation fee: AUD 0 (first two ASNs free)
- Annual membership fee: Associate members with no chargeable resources pay AUD 500 per year; members holding addresses pay Base Fee (AUD 1,295 in 2026, AUD 1,356 in 2027) times a Bit Factor that grows with the holding
- Total Year 1 (Associate): AUD 1,000 (AUD 500 sign-up, billed to AS number applicants too, plus the AUD 500 annual fee)
Initial Costs (Year 1, additional ASNs from the 3rd):
- ASN allocation fee: AUD 500
- Annual ASN fee: AUD 100
- Total for additional ASN: AUD 600 first year, AUD 100 annually thereafter
Annual Costs (Year 2+):
- Membership fee: AUD 500+ (varies by resources)
- First two ASNs: Free
- Additional ASNs: AUD 100 each
- Total Annual: AUD 500+ (base membership)
APNIC fees with IP addresses
APNIC's membership tiers (Associate, Very Small to Extra Large) set voting weight, not fees. The fee comes from a formula: Base Fee times Bit Factor to the power of the holding. A new member holding a /24 and a /48 pays AUD 1,295 per year in 2026 (AUD 1,356 in 2027), plus the AUD 500 sign-up; a /24 with a /32 pays AUD 2,256 in 2026 (APNIC: how much does it cost).
APNIC NIR Alternative
Some APNIC region countries have National Internet Registries (NIRs):
- JPNIC (Japan)
- CNNIC (China)
- KRNIC (South Korea, operated by KISA)
- TWNIC (Taiwan)
NIR fees vary by country and are often different from direct APNIC membership. Check with your local NIR for specific pricing.
LACNIC Cost Breakdown
LACNIC (Latin America and Caribbean Network Information Centre) charges for the ASN itself and separately for address space.
LACNIC ASN fees
LACNIC charges a one-time US$1,000 fee to assign an ASN and no annual fee for the ASN itself (LACNIC ASN fees). First-time Nano and Micro ISPs pay US$500, and a 50% discount on the first ASN of IPv6 Small ISPs runs to the end of 2026. IP address holdings are billed separately: an ISP's IPv4 annual fee in 2026 starts at US$633 (Nano). The applicant must be legally established in the LACNIC region.
AFRINIC Cost Breakdown
AFRINIC (African Network Information Centre) charges a fixed fee for an ASN-only End User.
AFRINIC ASN fees
An ASN-only End User pays US$400 for the assignment plus US$50 per year. The first invoice is US$550 and covers the assignment and the first three years (AFRINIC fees, a schedule dating from 2008 unless amended). An organization that also holds IPv4 or IPv6 from AFRINIC pays its address-space membership fee instead of the US$50.

You cannot shop between RIRs: ARIN and LACNIC only serve organizations legally established in their regions, and your RIR follows where your network operates. Within the RIPE region the choice is between membership and sponsorship, and for one ASN the sponsored route costs €1,720 less per year in 2026.
Infrastructure Costs
Beyond the registry fee, an ASN only works with a BGP-capable router, at least two upstream or peering links, and address space to announce.
Routing Equipment
Any router that speaks BGP will do, from a small appliance to a carrier-grade chassis; software routers such as BIRD or FRRouting on commodity hardware are common in small networks. Price follows port speed and redundancy: budget for a second unit if you need high availability, plus rack space, power and a maintenance contract.
Network Connectivity
Transit is usually the largest recurring line. The RIPE NCC only assigns an ASN to a network that is multihomed (ripe-679), and in practice its request form asks for at least two peering partners, so budget for two upstream or peering links from day one. Prices depend on port speed, commit and location: get quotes from the carriers present in your data center.
Address Space You Will Announce
An ASN announces prefixes, so you need at least one block. Through us that is a leased IPv6 /48 at €40 per year (provider-aggregatable space from our allocation, it returns to the pool when the lease ends) or an IPv6 PI /48 at €435 in the first year and €135 per year after that (assigned by the RIPE NCC to your organization, it stays with you if you leave). Either can be added to the ASN order in the same wizard.
Internet Exchange Point (IXP) Costs
An IXP port replaces part of your paid transit with peering. Port fees scale with speed, and a cross-connect plus colocation in the IXP's data center come on top; each IXP publishes its own price list.
Operational Costs
Staffing and Expertise
Someone has to run BGP: an in-house engineer, a managed-BGP provider, or a consultant for the setup and a maintenance contract afterwards. The cost follows local salaries and the size of the network, not the RIR.
Monitoring and Management Tools
Free sources cover the basics: RouteViews and RIPE RIS for route visibility, public looking glasses, and our ASN Lookup for the prefixes and neighbors of any ASN. Commercial BGP monitoring, NMS and IPAM products are priced per prefix or per seat.
Documentation and Compliance
IRR: route objects in the RIPE Database carry no charge for RIPE-region prefixes; RADb costs $595 per year, $425 for non-profit or educational users (radb.net). RPKI: ROAs and ASPA objects (available in the dashboard since late 2025) cost nothing in the RIPE NCC hosted RPKI Dashboard; the real cost is the time to keep them in step with your announcements.
Hidden Costs Often Overlooked
Time and Learning Curve
Learning BGP, configuring the first sessions and testing filters takes engineer time before the ASN earns anything. A free practice ground exists: dn42 Explained: Practice BGP Before You Announce on the Real Internet.
Troubleshooting and Maintenance
Routine work stays after the setup: prefix-list and ROA updates, peer changes, incident response and the documentation your upstreams ask for. Plan a recurring block of hours rather than a one-off project.
Risk and Opportunity Costs
Downtime costs depend on what the network carries. Multihoming under your own ASN removes the single-provider failure mode, and that is usually the reason to register one. A small hosting company in the RIPE region pays €130 a year in registry fees; its two transit links and a router cost many times that. The proportions hold for a large network: the registry line is fixed, everything else scales with traffic and staff.
Cost Optimization Strategies
Reduce RIR Fees
Strategies:
- Use sponsoring LIR instead of direct membership (RIPE)
- Choose the right RIR tier based on actual resource needs
- Return or stop sponsoring unused ASNs before 31 December: the RIPE NCC bills per-ASN fees on the resources held at that date, and a stop-sponsorship request in the LIR Portal takes effect immediately
- Consolidate resources under single membership where possible
Reduce Transit Costs
Strategies:
- Negotiate multi-year contracts for better rates
- Participate in IXPs to reduce paid transit volume
- Establish peering relationships to exchange traffic for free
- Right-size bandwidth based on actual needs, not future "maybes"
- Use asymmetric bandwidth (higher inbound than outbound if applicable)
Reduce Infrastructure Costs
Strategies:
- Buy used equipment for non-critical applications
- Lease equipment to spread costs over time
- Use virtual routers in data center environments
- Implement software-based routing (FRR, BIRD) on commodity hardware
Reduce Operational Costs
Strategies:
- Outsource to managed service providers for predictable costs
- Use automation to reduce manual configuration time
- Implement monitoring early to prevent costly incidents
- Document thoroughly to reduce knowledge dependency
- Train existing staff rather than hiring specialists
What Our ASN Sponsorship Covers
Our sponsorship costs €130 per year for an ASN alone. The fee covers preparing the file, filing and following up with the RIPE NCC, and keeping the records as your sponsoring LIR; route objects, RPKI ROAs and LOAs are handled from the dashboard, which also runs daily health checks on the ASN. Paying two years at order costs €234: year two is 20% off our fee, and the RIPE NCC line stays at cost. Fees are non-refundable. Individuals can hold an ASN: name and address are published in the RIPE Database, phone numbers never are.
Order through our ASN registration service: the form takes minutes, then identity verification and our review. Your ASN is typically live in 1 to 2 business days once your file is complete, RIPE NCC processing included.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which RIR has the lowest ASN fees?
Your RIR follows where your organization is established: ARIN and LACNIC only serve organizations legally formed in their regions. Within the RIPE region, the lowest cost for one ASN is a sponsoring LIR: €130 per year through us, against €1,850 as a direct member in 2026. Among direct registrations, LACNIC charges US$1,000 once with no annual ASN fee, and AFRINIC US$400 plus US$50 per year.
Can I reduce costs by using a sponsoring LIR?
In the RIPE region a sponsored ASN costs €130 per year through us, against €1,850 for a direct member in 2026 (€1,894 in 2027 with the first ASN included, ripe-867). The sponsoring LIR holds the RIPE NCC contract and passes the €50 per-ASN fee through at cost; you sign an End User agreement and keep the number if you later move to another sponsor.
Are there any free ASNs?
No RIR issues public ASNs for free. APNIC waives the allocation and annual fees on an account holder's first two ASNs, but membership still costs AUD 500 per year for an Associate plus the AUD 500 sign-up. From 2027 a RIPE NCC member's first ASN is included in the €1,894 annual fee (ripe-867). Private ASNs (64512 to 65534 and 4200000000 to 4294967294, RFC 6996) cost nothing but are never announced on the public Internet; see Private ASN Ranges vs Your Own Public ASN: The Complete Guide.
How much does it really cost to operate an ASN?
Registry fees are the only fixed part: €130 a year sponsored in the RIPE region. Transit, a BGP-capable router (hardware, or software such as BIRD or FRRouting) and staff time make up the rest, and transit is usually the largest line because multihoming means two links. Those costs depend on traffic and location, not on the RIR.
What changes in 2027?
At the RIPE NCC, ripe-867 sets €1,894 per LIR account with the first ASN included and €50 per additional ASN; independent assignments stay at €75. ARIN's 3X-Small fee rises to $288.75 and APNIC's base fee to AUD 1,356 on 1 January 2027. Our price is €130 per year; the RIPE NCC line inside it follows the scheme in force.
Can I return my ASN if I no longer need it?
Yes. A sponsored ASN goes back through your sponsoring LIR, which can end the sponsorship and return the number in the LIR Portal; a directly registered ASN goes back through your RIR. The RIPE NCC bills per-ASN fees on the resources held on 31 December, so return it before that date to avoid next year's charge. Fees already paid are non-refundable. To keep the number but leave your LIR, change your sponsoring LIR instead (see the sponsoring LIR section above).
Summary
The registry fee is the smallest line: €130 per year sponsored, €1,850 per year as a RIPE NCC member with one ASN in 2026 and €1,894 in 2027. Transit and hardware decide the rest of the budget, and neither depends on which RIR issued the number. If you hold the ASN under another LIR, moving it costs no setup fee; if you do not hold one yet, the sponsored route above is the one to price first.
